Review: Tianeptine, Better alternative to SSRIs?

Tianeptine is mainly used as an antidepressant without the side effects of many of the more popular drugs. It is a selective Serotonin re-uptake enhancer (SSRE), and it may also be useful for asthma or irritable bowel syndrome and as an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety.)  Can have powerful mood-boosting effects and some have praised it for its cognitive enhancement abilities.

Tianeptine Dosage

Generally recommended as 12.5mg, 3X daily for the sodium form. One study found that between 25-50mg daily was as effective as prescribed antidepressants [1]. May react poorly with alcohol, including chance of fatal intoxication. Should not be taken with MAOIs.

Time to effect

Effects may be felt within 30 minutes of the first dose. Effects generally last a few hours.

Very inexpensive. Can be found around $4/gram.

Anecdotes often praise its effect on depression and for euphoria similar but weaker than opioids such as oxycodone. May make withdrawals from alcohol and other drugs easier to handle. Anecdotes for sleep are all over the place and highly individual dependent. Many found no effects on sleep, some encountered insomnia, and some found better sleep.

One user on Longecity felt strongly enough to post a PSA on Tianeptine to those prone with addiction as it may work similarly as opiates. On Reddit, users posted their thoughts on this post with many questioning the legitimacy and accuracy, including the owner of, MisterYouAreSoDumb.

A lot of people come to the Better Brain to determine Tianeptine’s effect on sleep, here are a few anecdotes concerning sleep issues and benefits:

GhastlyPrez: “I’ve found L theanine, cdp choline, and tianeptine helpful in easing me into sleep”

Colin: “I’ve been on tianeptine for around 3 weeks and the past week I have slept an inoridinate amount of time whenever i’ve had the chance.”

SirGabsAlot posted on Reddit about Tianeptine possibly causing his insomnia. HackersInTeslas replied, “Tianeptine gave me the WORST insomnia and nightmares when I first started” but was able to fix the issue with dosage adjustments.

Side Effects

The most common adverse effects are nausea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and changes in dreaming [1]. Despite anecdotal reports of effects on sleep both positive and negative, one study found no effects on sleep other than a first hour wakefulness boost [3]. The effects of Tianeptine on sleep are still being researched.

Tianeptine is very promising for possibly treating mood disorders without some of the major side effects of the commonly prescribed drugs which may have negative effects on libido, sexual performance, cardiovascular function, and more. However, many users do not continue to take Tianeptine because of its own common side effects such as headaches and insomnia. Also, many found that the effects wore off too quickly or were no longer effective for them after a period of time. Overall, this is a very inexpensive drug to try for mood disorders and cognitive enhancement with few major side effects.
